Legend of the Five Rings: Isles of Fortune
A little smaller than normal and other would even call her delicate, but only decievingly so, she is stronger than she looks.
Her hair is a dark brown, like her eyes, and she doesn’t have any feature that would make you think she has any Gaijin blood, even though she does from a very distant ancestor.
She pretty much always look serene and calm, but can hardly hide her curiosity in almost everything new she encounters.
Her armor is a typical riding armor of her Clan’s color, the Mon’s of both the Unicorn and the Shiotome are present. In the middle of the Unicorn mon, a smaller circle has the Shinjo family mon.
She can almost always be seen with a few specific items, namely her Daisho which is pretty standard looking. The saya is white with purple silk cord while the handle has purple silk wrapping. The metal parts of the guard and the handles, all silver, do have some engraving of horses, but they are subtle and one would need to have the sword in hand to really see them.
Her spear keeps the same color pattern of primarily white and purple for any strings or other additions, silver for the metalic parts.
Her bow on the other side is very standard issue Unicorn Dai-Kyu.
The other few items she always has is her traveling pack, her word-tiles and a pendant she keeps hidden in her kimono and armor, though the chain is often visible.
Born Shinjo, she attended the Utaku Battle Maiden school and became a Shiotome. For multiple reasons, she was sent there by her parents themselves while she didn’t particularily like the idea of being away from her family for much of the same reasons. One could consider her to be freakishly unlucky in general, and that is not even considering the fact she was born mute, only able to produce a raspy sound instead of any real voice, her problem being undevelopped vocal chords.
Regardless of how it happened, she still became a valued member of the Shiotome and her abilities with a bow and spear cover her lack of real talent in kenjutsu.
Even though she decently strong, her body looks otherwise. Thankfully, Harukaze, her Utaku Battle Steed, more than make up for it in making her look imposing.
Once her Genpuku finished when she was 14, she was given her first and still current assignment on the Isles of Fortune as a part of the exploring group. She was assigned to the embassy and was sent with various groups to explore around. She has been at it for two years with very few moments outside of the Isles, notably for the latest Winter court. Her extended time in the region allowed her to have a very extensive knowledge of the most explored roads and the main city.
1. WHAT CLAN DOES YOUR CHARACTER BELONG TO?
2. WHAT FAMILY DOES YOUR CHARACTER BELONG TO?
3. IS YOUR CHARACTER A BUSHI, A SHUGENJA, OR A COURTIER?
4. HOW WOULD OTHERS DESCRIBE YOUR CHARACTER’S APPEARANCE?
Somewhat small for a bushi, she is still rather strong compared to appearances. Delicate features makes her beautiful and those are hardly diminished even in battle. She always look serene and thinking, her face lighting up with curiosity at random times when something new is presented to her or she thinks of a strange possibility. In general though, she looks closer to what one would expect of a courtier, and she might have become one, had she been able to talk.
5. WHAT IS YOUR CHARACTER’S PRIMARY MOTIVATION?
Surviving would be a big one. She is very unlucky and only tries to serve her family and lord as best as she can without causing any catastrophe or bringing shame to them. Death isn’t a viable escape to her.
6. WHO IS THE PERSON YOUR CHARACTER TRUSTS MOST IN THE WORLD?
7. WHAT IS YOUR CHARACTER’S GREATEST STRENGTH AND WEAKNESS?
Being mute is definitely a weakness. Her curiosity can also get the better of her sometimes and throw her in weird situations. Her looks, while good, to tend to have people underestimate her for being weak as she is on the smaller side. Not necessarily a bad thing as she can turn it to an advantage, but can sometimes cause be a pain.
She has very good control of herself and will almost always appear calm and serene, even in the mids of battle.
Her kindness is a strenght, and a weakness at the same time, as some try to abuse it while some actually deserve it and take note of it..
8. WHAT DOES YOUR CHARACTER THINK OF BUSHIDO?
Himawari is very kind and compassionate, this being something she admires of her ancestor Shinjo. She is still a Battle Maiden though, so Honor and Honesty have a great importance for her. While she does think the tennets of the bushido are all important in everything, she does find courtesy and sincerity to often veil malicious intentions, making her more wary of those trying to convince her of anything.
9. WHAT IS YOUR CHARACTER’S OPINION OF HIS CLAN?
Himawari is very much a Unicorn. Compassionate, Honest, but also curious about the world beyond Rokugan and its narrow-minded philosophies. She loves her Clan and would go to the end of the world for it, happily actually.
10. IS YOUR CHARACTER MARRIED?
As a Shiotome, marriage means retirement. She doesn’t plan to retire early.
11. DOES YOUR CHARACTER HAVE ANY PREJUDICES?
The Spider clan doesn’t sit well with her. Their history, or rather the amount of it she knows, is rather creepy if you ask her. Other than that, the Scorpions open deceit forces her to regard them as untrustworthy and would rather avoid being associated with them if she can. This of course is no surprise. Her views on the other clans isn’t very clearly made as she lacks the first-hand knowledge with them to really make an opinion. She is also open minded enough that she can agree that even in the worst clan there can be good people, while there can be bad people even in her clan.
12. TO WHOM DOES YOUR CHARACTER OWE THE MOST LOYALTY?
Her Clan and lord. Her relations with her immediate family are a little strained and she hasn’t had the opportunity to have any interaction with people of higher status. Her Loyalty therefore resides with whomever of higher status than her that serves the wellness of her clan.
13. WHAT ARE YOUR CHARACTER’S FAVORITE AND LEAST FAVORITE THINGS?
She loves hearing people sing. It is a bittersweet love as she herself will never be able to produce a sound, but her ears works just fine and music, especially pretty voices, makes her smile. She also loves sweets, which are one of the few gifts she will truly love alongside paper and exotic paint. She is an artist and can appreciate art, but as a gift they are more cumbersome than anything. She is a warrior and hardly has anywhere to expose even the most prodigious masterpiece.
There are very few things she doesn’t like in terms of things like food, weather or entertainment, being open minded means she will try to find value in almost everything. She can’t stand people trying to manipulate her or others though. She understands that it is how the court works and is glad she didn’t become a courtier on that aspect, but while it is necessary in these settings as it is for the betterment of the Clan and Rokugan as a whole, when done for personal gain only it irks her to no end.
14. DOES YOUR CHARACTER HAVE ANY RECURRING MANNERISMS?
She observes a lot. If she happens to be observing something that strikes her curiosity, she will tilt her head a little. She fiddles a lot with her set of wood laths with words on them, often rewriting the words that are smudged or fading.
15. WHAT ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER’S EMOTIONS?
Curiosity isn’t something she can hide well. It’s not much an emotion, but her elation at discovering something new can be easily seen on her face. She doesn’t show fear unless it is controlling her, pain can show on her face, but even if she had a voice, she wouldn’t cry. Shame isn’t something she is used to, and would hardly know how to conceal it. Anger is something you will rarely see in her, but if she is angry, you will see it and probably feel it too.
16. HOW WOULD YOUR CHARACTER HANDLE A SUBORDINATE’S IMPROPER BEHAVIOR?
Unless it was something very big, she would probably let it slide. Her compassion and kindness gets in the way of her disciplining subordinates. It doesn’t help that she can’t scream at them either, only write very angrily.
17. HOW WOULD YOUR CHARACTER’S PARENTS DESCRIBE HER?
She was a child who, while loveable, had the potential to bring many problems. They sent her to the Battle Maiden school as soon as they could. It’s not that they wanted to get rid of her, but her bad luck was affecting those around her. She seemed at ease around horses and her ancestry allowed her to join the ranks of the Shiotome, hopefully growing strong enough to face the difficulties that would eventually plague her.
18. WHAT IS YOUR CHARACTER’S HIGHEST AMBITION?
One that can’t be said.
19. HOW RELIGIOUS IS YOUR CHARACTER?
Not very much for a Shiotome. Enough to say she believes and respects, not enough to devote herself to either the Fortunes of the Tao.
20. HOW WILL YOUR CHARACTER DIE?
That is a mystery, as many, many things could be her downfall, some with worse outcomes than others.
